Resident Social Life and Personal Care
Activities at Amsterdam Nursing Home provide a myriad of opportunities for residents to learn, grow, express themselves and have fun. Residents participate in programs that stimulate intellect, help rebuild strength and raise the spirit. Programs include arts & crafts (including a resident crafts show, popular with residents and staff alike), a cooking club, weekly concerts, a current events group and trips to local destinations like museums, local restaurants, baseball games, theater and shopping. Residents also participate in various clubs where experts teach novices the basics of needlework and painting. The Journal Club, begun in 1991, publishes articles and stories written by residents to "...inspire older people to look at their lives in a meaningful way and then share a part of it with future generations." On any given day, one can find Amsterdam residents reading The New York Times or enjoying books in our library. Large print and talking books are also available from our library cart. Dry cleaning, tailoring, newspaper delivery, telephone and cable TV are available to our residents. A unisex salon provides hair styling and other cosmetic needs a modest cost. Religious services for all major faiths are held each week on the premises.
